Who Knew - You Won’t
If I was a hundred and three, I would share all my boring stories with you. But you caught me too soon, now. Darling, what can I do, now?

Tequila - The Champs
Tequila!
I used to think that this song was about my dad, because his name is Akira, with an anglicized pronunciation of ah-KEE-la, and my family would always yell “Akira!” instead of tequila.
There’s a difference between enjoying something that’s problematic and excusing something that’s problematic because you enjoy it.

I grew up religious and sometimes I forget that some of the things that are very normal to me are not part of other peoples’ experiences.
That’s me in the stylish blue turtleneck and glasses. It’s 2003, I’m thirteen years old on a school trip to Quebec and I’m wearing a Purity Ring on my left hand.
I was hanging out with some friends last night and somehow we started talking about purity rings and how I had one that I got from my evangelical Christian summer camp and wore for about a year of my life before I got tired of wearing something on my hand 24/7. It got me thinking, though.
I didn’t even fully understand what sex was when I was twelve, and the way that “purity” and “virginity” were presented to me as a kid in church was pretty messed up—the common story of “a Father gives his Daughter a box wrapped up nicely and tells her to save it for someone special but then the Daughter gives the gift to too many people and the gift is ruined, etc etc” comes to mind. That kind of stuff is unrealistic, shaming and dangerous. I was pleased to hear that my friend received a comprehensive and inclusive sexual education through her Unitarian youth group and I’m glad that sort of thing exists.
Wanting to wait until you’re married to have sex is a big deal and good on those who want to do that with their lives. That’s an adult decision to make; that’s something that should be decided after being fully educated about what exactly it is you’re getting into.
I know it took me a long time to let go of all the guilt that I had surrounding sex, because I’d been taught to feel that sex was Bad Terrible Wrong unless it was hetero intercourse within the context of hetero marriage. That is not a healthy thing to teach kids. It’s not healthy to give out plumbing washers to children who don’t know any better to wear as rings symbolizing that they won’t have sex until they get married. It’s just not okay.
I wish I could express all of this more eloquently.
A compilation of David Letterman asking drummers if their drums are theirs or rented and then complimenting them on said drums. Extremely weird and funny little inside joke with himself.
